Tor Books, the largest publisher of science fiction and fantasy in the world, has teamed up with SCI FI Channel, where imagination, science fiction and fantasy live on television, to bring readers and fans the finest new voices in the field. Books from Tor have won every major award in the science fiction and fantasy fields, and for the last twenty years in a row, Tor has been named Best Publisher in the Locus Poll, the largest consumer poll in science fiction.

SCI FI reaches out to a broad range of fans through the SCI FI Channel with its critically acclaimed and award winning original dramas, reality programs, movies, and miniseries, currently in 93 million U.S. homes; SCI FI Magazine; and the online news service SCI FI Wire. SCIFI.COM is the official site of the SCI FI Channel and covers the broad spectrum of science fiction with daily news and reviews. SCIFI.COM is a "People's Choice" Webby Award winner and a Flash Forward Award winner.

Each month, a carefully selected Tor title receives the SCI FI Essential stamp of approval, which appears on the spine and cover of the book. Tor readers, the SCI FI audience, and new fans benefit from an array of special features promoting the new books. These features include live author chats on SCIFI.COM, and sample chapters and sneak peeks of upcoming books in the program on the site www.scifimonthlypick.com. Possible promotional plans to support the SCI FI Essential program may also include promotion on SCI FI's handheld AvantGo channel, highlights in the SCI FI Magazine books section and on-air coverage of select titles.

The SCI FI Essential books program launched July 2005 with the publication of Cory Doctorow's Someone Comes to Town, Someone Leaves Town (A Tor Hardcover & SCI FI Essential; $24.95). Doctorow, SF's tech-wonderboy, has established himself as one of the leading voices of next-generation science fiction: inventive, optimistic, and comfortable with the sheer strangeness of tomorrow. He is the co-editor of the popular weblog Boing Boing, with more than 3 million visitors a month. His first novel, Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, was nominated for a Nebula Award and won the Locus award for Best First Novel. He was also recently named one of the World Economic Forum's Young Global Leaders for 2007, as well as Forbes' Top 25 Web Celebrities for 2007.

Winter 2008 SCI FI Essential Book picks include:

*From the #1 New York Times bestseller, comes the launch of a new generation of the Wild Cards! From the start of the series in 1986, The Wild Cards series earned a reputation among connoisseurs for its smart reimagining of the superhero idea. Now, with Inside Straight, George R.R. Martin & Wild Cards Trust (A Tor Hardcover & SCI FI Essential; January 2008, $24.95), the Wild Cards continuity jumps forward to a new generation of major characters, entirely accessible to Martin's hundreds of thousands of new readers, with all-original stories by Martin himself, along with Daniel Abraham, Michael Cassutt, and Stephen Leigh, among others. George R.R. Martin, author of the acclaimed, international bestselling fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire, has been writing for more than 25 years. He has won multiple science fiction awards, including 4 Hugos, 2 Nebulas, the Bram Stoker Award, the Locus Award, the World Fantasy Award, the Daedelus, the Balrog, and the Daikon (Japanese Hugo). He has written 9 novels, 9 short story collections, 5 Twilight Zone episodes, 13 Beauty and the Beast episodes, edited 7 anthologies and 17 volumes of Wild Cards. Check out the brand new Wild Cards website with exclusive interviews with all the authors and outtakes from the books at www.wildcardsbooks.com. Also visit the interactive spin-off blog based on Inside Straight and featuring new original artwork by Mike Miller at http://americanhero.wildcardsbooks.com

*Kirkus Reviews calls Singularity's Ring (A Tor Hardcover & SCI FI Essential; February 2008, $24.95), "a distinctive debut" from Paul Melko, an exciting new voice in SF and active member of the Science Fiction Writers of America. It is a complicated adventure set mostly in a richly detailed future after most of the human race on Earth has perished in a mysterious event involving group consciousness, artificial intelligences, and a ring around the planet Earth. The central character is a cutting-edge five person group mind, Apollo Papadopulos, in training to become a space pilot. But someone or some force is out to get them, and the story is a continuing series of revelations about their nature and the nature of the world. It's an engaging SF story that moves right along and keeps surprising you.

*In what might be the oddest literary pairing of all time, childhood friends Gary K. Wolf, noted science fiction author and screenwriter, best known for creating the Roger Rabbit characters and Toontown, and John J. Myers, Catholic Archbishop of Newark, have teamed up to co-write an action/adventure science fiction novel Space Vulture (A Tor Hardcover & SCI FI Essential; March 2008, $24.95.) The book is an homage to "Space Hawk," the first science fiction novel the two read as schoolboys. A fast paced story, it features a heroic Interstellar Marshal Victor Corsaire and cowardly con man Jack Edward who join forces with a beautiful and courageous widow and her two young sons to battle Space Vulture, the most villainous marauder in the cosmos.

*The Hidden World (A Tor Hardcover & SCI FI Essential: April 2008, $25.95) is the astonishing conclusion to a masterwork of fantasy that began with The Princess of Roumania (Tor 2005). In Paul Park's remarkable tale of Roumania some characters die, some live on after death, and Miranda finally and unexpectedly finds love and an identity she can live inside for the rest of her life. Fans of contemporary, literary fantasy and of alternate history will appreciate this series. Entertainment Weekly called the third book in the series, The White Tyger, "The breathtaking climax to Paul Park's lyrical and mesmerizing series. Park...should be knighted."
